In Italy there are 12 billion trees, beech trees in greater numbers. A forest that will enable our country to save more than € 2 billion of sanctions, as required by the Kyoto Protocol.

The census, carried out in the last three years by the State Forestry Corps (under the coordination of the Scientific Council for Research in Agriculture and in collaboration with the Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea) has nearly 200 trees for every Italian with a value average of about 1,360 per hectare. Among the greenest regions of Emilia Romagna Italy stands out, boasting the highest average with 1,816 trees per hectare, followed by 1,815 from Umbria and the Marches by 1779, while the least populated of trees per hectare are Valle d ' Aosta to Sicily with 708 and 760.

In terms of technological equipment have been used GPS and GIS systems , technologies that make use of the proper auxiliary satellite to achieve the identification and analysis in the field of about 37 thousand data points for the various parameters. Over 300 thousand points of inventory and examined more than 400 foresters engaged in the implementation of the national inventory of Forests and forest carbon reservoirs.
